Police: Grant Street ramp closed for 3.5 hours
Times Staff Report
GARY | A semitrailer carrying a load of pizzas landed on its side Saturday at the entrance ramp from northbound Grant Street to westbound Interstate 80/94, Indiana State Police said.
About 8:30 a.m. until noon, the ramp was blocked so crews could clean and upright the 2005 semi.
There were no major highway traffic delays, with the exception of gapers' block, but officials diverted traffic from the ramp to the Broadway or Burr exits, police said.
The driver, Borislav Vasilev of Elk Grove Village, Ill., was ticketed for driving too fast, said Sgt. Wanda Clay.
"He took his speed too fast when he attempted to enter the curve portion of the ramp, which caused him to lose control," Clay said.
Vasilev, 30, was wearing his seat belt. He suffered cuts and scrapes and was taken to Methodist Hospital North Lake Campus in Gary.
No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured.
