WINFIELD | Two Winfield town leaders pitched in to help the street department work more than 24 hours straight, clearing blowing and drifting snow.

Winfield office manager Heidi Kendall said there were about 10 people who called in to complain about snow when it blanketed the region Tuesday and Wednesday, closing some schools and businesses.

"It got heavier and heavier," Kendall said.

Winfield Town Councilmen Jeff Wozniewski and Roland "Rollie" Brauer offered their services for snow removal, and backed it up with action.

Calling it a "significant" event, Wozniewski said he and Brauer, the three-man street department and two other community volunteers immediately began working.

Wozniewski said some of the workers started at 3:30 p.m Tuesday and worked for more than 24 hours. Some people went home about 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, then came back at 5 a.m. to resume snow clearing.

"We had several breakdowns, and a nonstop barrage of snow. The drifting was incredible, but our streets remained open the entire time. My hats go off to John Lincoln, the street department superintendent and all of the workers," Wozniewski said.
