Cop's home, pets lost in suspected arson fire
CROWN POINT | Lake County police said they've started a relief fund Monday for an Illinois police officer whose Dyer home was destroyed in a suspected arson.
Lynwood patrol Officer Kelly Johnson sped Dec. 20 to her home and found it ablaze, flames shooting out the roof. Her three children escaped the fire with minor burns and singed hair, police said.
But everything the family owned inside the home was destroyed, including six pets and Christmas presents.
Lake County police and the Lynwood Fraternal Order of Police are raising money for Johnson and her family.
"It's one day at a time," Johnson said of her family's losses during an announcement of the fund in Crown Point.
Christopher Costello, 23, was charged Dec. 23 with three felony counts of attempted murder and one felony count of arson related to the fire at the Sheffield Avenue home, Lake Criminal Court records show.
A second person of interest also will be questioned by police in the case, police Cmdr. Shaw Spurlock said Monday. Police said they are unsure what -- if any -- involvement the second person had in the matter.
Costello, also of Dyer, said he picked the police officer's home because he didn't like cops in general and had seen a patrol car parked in the driveway, Lake County police have said.
Costello was being held Monday at the Lake County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
