Fire breaks out at Michigan City NIPSCO plant

Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a Thursday afteroon fire at a NIPSCO facility in Michigan City.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 5:30 p.m., according to a NIPSCO spokeswoman. The fire broke out in a coal conveyor belt chute, which is a 500-foot long enclosed structure. The fire was later under control without spreading to any other plant areas.

No one was injured in the fire and there was no disruption in providing power to customers, the spokeswoman said. The spokeswoman said the plant would be shut down for an undetermined amount of time until repairs and made and the cause of the fire is determined.
