HISTORICAL SOCIETY | Griffith

Descendants of Pioneer Griffith Families are invited to visit the Griffith Historical Society Museum and Park from 2 to 4 p.m. July 13 at 201 S. Broad St. Cousins of the Grimmer, Govert, Spitz, Miller and Beiriger families

will host the open house and share pictures and memories of family businesses and homes while growing up in Griffith. The Grimmer family homes include a Sears home. Sundays in July and August will continue to feature other businesses and homes. The public is invited and admission is free.

SHADE GARDENING | Schererville

BALANCING BUGS | Griffith

POWER STEAM SHOW | Crown Point

South Lake Agricultural Historical Society Inc. presents its 24th Annual Antique Power Steam Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and July 13 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. Operating steam engines, sawmills, threshing machines, balers and old farming tools, wagons, small engines, horse shoeing and early agricultural equipment are displayed. Antique cars and trucks, a garden tractor pull and farm toy show are featured as well as a petting zoo and model railroad display. Entertainment, food and a flea market. John Deer tractors and Witte small engines are featured this year. Admission is $4 for adults and free for youths 15 and younger with an adult. Parking is free.

STREET MARKET | Highland

Fruits and vegetables, organic herbs, zesty spices, artesian breads, sweets and homemade items will be sold during the Highland Street Market sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. Admission is free. Some vendors accept WIC vouchers. The market is open from 9 am. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, through Oct. 11, at Main Square, 3001 Ridge Road.

SQUIRMY WORMS | Munster

Squirmy Worms is at 10:30 a.m. July 17 at the Lake County Public Library's Munster branch, 8701 Calumet Ave. Youths 6 and older will learn fun facts about composting by attending a storytelling adventure about worms, nature's tiny recyclers. Register in advance.

Mother Goose on the Loose is at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. July 15 and 29 at the Lake County Public Library's Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St. Babies and toddlers, 6 to 35 months old, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, will participate in nursery rhymes, finger plays, musical activities and more. SATURDAY MARKET | Gary

Spirit Land Saturday Market will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 20 at Spirit of God, 1010 Roosevelt St. The outdoor market will feature handcrafted merchandise from artist from and around the community, fresh fruits and vegetables and food vendors. Local musicians, along with gospel and other choirs, will participate. Information booths for Spirit of God and Live Up Art, as well as other community groups, will be available.

MUSICAL BENEFIT | Merrillville

The July 19 performance of the Broadway musical "Chicago" at the Star Plaza Theatre will be a benefit for St. Jude House. Opening night for this Tony Award-winning show, first staged on Broadway in 1975, will raise funds for programming at the Crown Point shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The shelter provides all services, including food, clothing, advocacy, education, and legal support at no charge to those needing assistance. Tickets for the July 19 show, priced at $25 and $20, are available at Star Plaza Theatre Box Office, Ticket Master or St. Jude House. Sponsors are welcome. A raffle for items with a Chicago theme will be offered during intermission. A display of vintage cars by the Regional Streeters of Indiana Car Club will be held from 5:30 to 7:0 p.m. in the theater parking lot.

FITNESS CLASS | Schererville

Omni 41 will offer the Les Mills BODYPUMP program at the fitness center, 221 S. U.S. 41. It's a 60-minute toning and conditioning class with weights and is for just about anyone who wants to add strength training into their aerobic workout. The class is at 10:15 a.m. July 26. It's open to members and nonmembers. Registration opens today. Space is limited.

SPINAL CORD FILMS | Portage

The Northwest Indiana Spinal Cord Injury Group is sponsoring a film series on life in a wheelchair. All films will begin at 2 p.m. at the Portage 16/IMAX, 6550 U.S. Viewings are free, but donations will be accepted. The films include "Christopher Reeve: Hope in Motion" on July 20. The film focuses on Reeve's recovery of movement and his fight to fully regain his mobility. It follows Reeve over many months of treatment and public campaigning for funds for stem cell research. The film was completed shortly before his death. On Aug. 3, the film will be "Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita." When neurologist Dr. Jack Kessler's daughter injured her spine in a skiing accident, he turned his energies toward finding a method to repair damaged spinal cords. The Aug. 17 film is "Murderball." The film is an intimate and personal look at life in a wheelchair. The story chronicles the journey of the United States Para Olympic Quad Rugby Team from 2002 to 2004, ending in Athens, Greece with

a championship game against the team's rivals from Canada.
