VALPARAISO | Elected officials at the county level are slated to receive a $1,000 raise next year along with county employees.

The increase was approved just before the Porter County Council wrapped up work on its proposed 2009 budget Tuesday evening.

The pay increase for elected officials was proposed by Councilwoman Rita Stevenson, who also is slated to receive a $1,000 raise as an employee of the county clerk's office.

The increase for elected officials was approved by a 4-2 vote, with dissenting votes cast by Councilmen Bob Poparad and Dan Whitten.

Councilman Mike Bucko, elected earlier this month as the county's next treasurer, said if the county wants the best people running for office, it must offer attractive salaries.
