A baby girl died at a Chicago hospital after she was rushed from a Hammond home Saturday night, and a 28-year-old Hammond man was arrested at the hospital on suspicion of a crime linked to the child, police said Sunday.

Bruises were found on the 17-month-old girl's body after she was taken from a home in Hammond's Robertsdale neighborhood about 9 p.m. Saturday, Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said.

The man, who had a relationship with the child's mother, was not charged Sunday, Hoyda said. Hoyda did not say what charges the man could face. Hoyda called the man a "person of interest" to police. Hoyda did not say whether investigators suspect the man committed a crime that led to the child's death at The University of Chicago Hospitals. The man was jailed at the Hammond police station Sunday night, Hoyda said.

"There was enough information available that the person was arrested," Hoyda said.

Hoyda said he could not say if the bruises were related to the girl's death. An autopsy is scheduled for today. No information on the child was released Sunday night from the Cook County medical examiner's office.

An ambulance responded Saturday night to a house in the 1200 block of Lakeview Avenue on a report a child was suffering breathing problems. The girl, who was unresponsive, was taken to St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers in Hammond, then to the University of Chicago Hospitals, Hoyda said.

Women at the Lakeview Avenue house Sunday night offered no information.
