String of arrests coupled with flunking out of intensive drug program leads to prison time
CROWN POINT | A Hobart man who stole from his parents after flunking out of a drug treatment program has been sentenced to five years in prison in Lake County criminal court.
Scott Remaley, 25, pleaded guilty to one count each of theft and carrying a handgun without a license.
His sentence is to be served on top of a remaining sentence for assisting a criminal. He was on parole for that conviction when he stole cash, jewelry and a handgun from his parents, according to court records.
In May 2005, Remaley, of 104 E. Third St., pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assisting a criminal in the July 11, 2001, drug overdose death of Amy Chattin. Remaley admitted he took drugs with Chattin the night she died.
For that crime, Lake Criminal Court Judge Salvador Vasquez sentenced Remaley to six months in the county jail and 15 months in the Lake County Community Corrections Forensic Diversion Program -- an intensive drug treatment program.
In February 2006, Vasquez granted a petition to revoke Remaley's probation because of his behavior in the program.
Remaley tested positive for heroin, oxycodone and other opiates in seven drug tests, went absent without leave from the program twice, and a case manager found bottles of vodka, syringes and what appeared to be heroin in Remaley's room, according to the petition.
Vasquez ordered Remaley to spend the remaining six months in jail. Shortly after serving that sentence, Remaley committed the theft against his parents.
