GRIFFITH | State insurance experts will be in Griffith today and Tuesday to help homeowners sift through policies and hear complaints about coverage.

Some region residents hit by the recent tornado and severe storms are upset their insurance companies haven't sent adjusters or aren't covering all of their claims, Griffith Town Council President Rick Ryfa said.

Insurance companies have denied paying for sidewalks that were damaged by fallen or uprooted trees, he said.

At the direction of Gov. Mitch Daniels, a senior team from the Indiana Department of Insurance will assist the homeowners.

Residents can meet with the insurance experts from noon to 7 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Griffith Town Hall, 111 N. Broad St.

They'll look over the policies and make sure the companies are covering what they're supposed to. The service is free and open to all region residents who are filing insurance claims because of the Aug. 4 storms, Ryfa said.

The state agency also assisted victims of the 2006 Highland flood.

The department members can help people in understanding what their policy covers, helping them get copies of their policy if it was destroyed in the storm and taking complaints if citizens feel they have not been well served by their insurance company or agent, according to a statement from the agency.
