Woman gets 3 years for scalding son

Lake Criminal Court Judge Salvador Vasquez sentenced Robin D. Shields, 30, to three years in prison. The Lake County prosecutor's office said she pleaded guilty last month to a child neglect charge arising from an incident March 29 in her East Chicago home.

Police said she forced her then 5-year-old son to sit in a bathtub of scalding water after he soiled his pants. She later took him to St. Catherine Hospital, where the boy was treated for burns that required him to undergo skin grafts, painful treatment, rehabilitation to learn to walk again and counseling.

2 men sentenced to prison for burglaries

Lake Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray sentenced Anthony Giddeon, 23, of East Chicago, to five years and Roger W. Byers Sr., 41, of Chesterton, to 10 years this week in two unrelated burglaries.

The Lake County prosecutor's office said a jury convicted Giddeon last month of breaking into an ex-girlfriend's East Chicago home May 30 and threatening to kill her.

The prosecutor's office said Byers pleaded guilty last month to breaking into a Gary home Jan. 4 and stealing television sets, a computer and video game equipment. He was found in the basement bathroom wearing gloves.
