Animal campaign | Chicago Heights

South Suburban Humane Society is having a Frosty Feline Fix Campaign now through March 31. Vouchers will be available that will provide $25 cat or kitten spays/neuters. Low income households can receive vouchers for $10 spay/neuters. Proof is required. Rabies vaccines are required or can be purchased at time of surgery at owner's expense. Additional evaluation costs may apply per individual vet office policies. The shelter is at 1103 W. End Ave.

Community meal | Calumet City

St. Victor Church sponsors a community meal from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoons in the rectory hall of the church, 554 Hirsch Ave. Anyone in need is welcome. Volunteers are needed to help serve the meals.

Book sale | Lansing

Friends of Lansing Public Library will have a book sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 2 at the library, 2750 Indiana Ave. Members can shop from 9 to 10 a.m. Only cash can be accepted.

Mardi Gras | Chicago

Annunciata Parish will have its council dinner dance starting at 6 p.m. Feb. 2 at Knights of Columbus Hall, 11207 Ewing Ave. Dinner is at 7 p.m. with dancing from 8 p.m. to midnight. The theme is Mardi Gras. Tickets are $45 and include party favors and masks.

Salad buffet | South Holland

St. Jude Women's Club will have its annual salad buffet Feb. 5 in the school gym, 880 E. 154th St. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7:15 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 if purchased by Feb. 3 or $13 at the door. All adults are invited to attend. Price includes a catered dinner of chicken, sliced beef, mostaccioli, potatoes and rolls. Family and friends are asked to bring a homemade salad in a disposable container. There will be a special raffle for all those who bring a salad. Desserts will include a variety of paczkis.

BENEFIT CONCERT | Griffith

A benefit concert for New Mercies Community Services is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at Reed's Temple COGIC, 1300 N. Broad St. Doors open at 6 p.m. The concert features Dexter Walker & Zion Movement, Sylvester Downs of Melodies of Praise, Reed's Temple Choir, One Christ, Surrendered, Requita Sykes and others. Tickets cost $10 in advance and $12 at the door. New Mercies, in Chicago's south suburbs, is a not-for-profit organization that provides a variety of support services for low-income people, the elderly and families with disabilities. South Suburban Humane Society is in need of volunteers to take cats and dogs to special events. They are also needed to take animals to the PETCO/PetSmart events on weekends.

VALENTINE BINGO | Hammond

Faith United Church of Christ will offer valentine bingo Feb. 10 at 3030 175th St. Dinner will be served about 11:30 a.m., with bingo played from 1 to 4 p.m. There is a $5 charge for the stuffed cabbage dinner. Cost to play bingo is $3 for mastercard and dessert or $10 for a full setup, which includes mastercard, special games and dessert. Special raffles and door prizes are planned.

Organ donation | Illinois

Organ and tissue donor registration is open for those who have never registered or those registered prior to Jan. 1, 2006. Signing the back of a driver's license is no longer adequate. The new registry also eliminates the need for potential donors to have consent from surviving family members or loved ones. Donors must be 18 or older.

Marrow drive | South Holland

The South Suburban College Office of Student Life & Leadership will host a National Bone Marrow Donor Program

from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Cafeteria. This event is intended to raise awareness about the need for bone marrow donors especially in the black community, as well as inform people about how to become a bone marrow donor. The event is open to SSC students, staff and the general public. The college is at 15800 S. State St.

Fashion show | Lynwood

The Thornton Fractional South Booster Club will have its 23rd annual fashion show Feb. 21 at Villa de Bruno, 19825 Stony Island Ave. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The fee is $35 for adults, $20 for students. There is a cash bar. The theme of the show is "Pirates of the South Seas."

Poker tournament | Frankfort, Ill.

SouthSTAR Services will host its sixth Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament Feb. 24 at 23320 S. Lagrange Road. The doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the tournament will begin at 12:30 p.m. The cost for pre-registered players is $100 and the cost for players at the door is $125. The tournament will include a raffle for a plasma TV, 50/50 Raffle, a buffet, beverages, prizes and viewing of sports events. Based on participation of 200 or more players, there will be $10,000 in prizes. Sponsorship opportunities are available. SouthSTAR Services, a nonprofit organization in Chicago Heights, provides job training, employment, community living, and support services to more than 300 individuals with development disabilities.
