Local school corporations and charter schools are slated to receive full-day kindergarten grants for next school year, the state of Indiana announced this week.
The state will pay an estimated $665 per full-day kindergartner in the 2007-08 school year, according to a release from the Indiana Department of Education. State legislators budgeted for $33.5 million for the 2007-08 year. Legislators budgeted $58.5 million for 2008-09.
The funding amounts were determined by the number of corporations and schools that applied, according to the release.
"Because state grant funding is not sufficient to serve all kindergarten students, a corporation/school may leverage the grants using general funds or voluntary parent fees to fully fund individual full-day programs," the release says.
