Cops say Lansing resident was speeding, lost control
A 34-year-old man with ties to Lansing and South Holland died early Monday morning in an accident on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
Timothy Smith lost control of his 2006 Dodge Durango after hitting snow about 1:20 a.m. on Interstate 90/94 near 45th Street, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Luis Gutierrez said. Driving too fast in snowy conditions led to the accident, Gutierrez said.
"He lost control after crossing a median from the express to the local lanes (and) striking the crash barriers," he said. "That impact caused him to go across local lanes, being struck by a truck semitrailer."
No one else was hurt in the accident, Gutierrez said.
A representative from the Cook County medical examiner's office said Smith was pronounced dead at 2:58 a.m. at Stroger Hospital in Chicago, after being admitted with multiple injuries. An autopsy was scheduled Monday, she said.
Gutierrez said Smith had a Lansing address, but the medical examiner's office listed a South Holland address.
Three northbound local lanes of the expressway were shut down from 1:30 to 3:45 a.m., Gutierrez said.
