DEMOTTE | Hot weather and vintage cars combined to draw hundreds to Spencer Park for the weekend's Summer Celebration Car and Bike Show.
The annual event, sponsored by the DeMotte parks department, featured 130 car and motorcycle entrants vying for trophies in a number of categories.
"It's a family friendly fun show," said Heather Tokarz, the town's office manager. She said the idea originated years ago with a cruise night.
Tokarz credits volunteers with making the Saturday show a summertime attraction.
"We could not have done this without the volunteers. It turns into an awesome show," she said.
The show also serves as a moneymaker for the parks department. Tokarz said proceeds from the entry fees have helped to purchase new pieces of playground equipment for Spencer Park for the past six years.
Art Mitchell exhibited his rebuilt 1930 Ford Woody Panel car called "Lumber Yard." The Lowell resident started buying and modifying vintage cars in 1984 when he purchased a 1941 Ford coupe, saying with a laugh, "That's when all the trouble started."
Mitchell, who attends several shows a year, said displaying the cars for the public is part of the appeal.
"It's a hobby, something to do," Mitchell said. "You get to show your creations and (see) how people respond. It's an expensive hobby."
