Coming events at the Wanatah Scarecrow Festival Sept. 26-28 include the pork chop dinner on Friday sponsored by the Salem United Church of Christ at Wanatah School. Serving is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Harvest Contest at Scarecrow square will have the tallest sunflower; largest ear of corn and largest zinnia; largest tomato and largest watermelon; most pods on a soybean stalk and most unusual shaped gourd or squash.
The Rusty Springs band will entertain in tent B from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the square. Merchants drawing is at 8 p.m. and you must be present to win.
Throughout the festival there will be arts and craft booths, food and game booths, kiddie rides, pony rides, rock wall climb, scarecrow displays around town and the Scarecrow softball tourney at South Central School.
Saturday events include the 5K run and 3K walk beginning at 8 a.m. at the American Legion Post, Second and Washington streets.
The Scarecrow Scamper for children ages 2 to 9 begins at 9:30 a.m. at Main and First streets.
The parade begins at the legion post and concludes there. Entertainment at tent B begins at noon until 8 p.m. Frank Birdsall will have a children's display;'the Horseshoe Cloggers will dance and the group Homemade Jam Leek and Moser.
The talent and Scarecrow dress up contests are from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
The Lions Club fish fry will be served from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the school.
The legion is sponsoring a karaoke contest at 8 p.m. Sign up at 7:30 p.m.Merchants drawings at 8 p.m.
Sunday events begin with a pancake breakfast at Sacred Heart Catholic Church parish hall at 8 a.m.
3 on 3 basketball at school 8 a.m. Car show at Lions Park 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. sponsored by the MIchiana Antique Auto Club.
Non-denominational church service is at 10 a.m. at tent B. Nashville Revue at 11:30 a.m.m Kiddie's Pedal Pull at 1 p.m. at Lions Park. The Morgan Jug Band will entertain from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Good Time Cloggers will dance from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
The legion will have a duck raffle at 4 p.m.Other entertainment include scarecrow sculpting for children. Bingo is from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. Closing ceremonies and merchants drawings are at 4 p.m.
Drop box
Wanatah Public Library has a new outside drop box for returning books when the library is not open. One of the library assistants is retiring as of Dec. 31. Applications for the position are being accepted at the library. Further information can be obtained by consulting librarian Pat Baum.
Meeting
The Wanatah Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Sept. 14 at Wanatah Town Hall. The meeting is open to anyone interested in early Wanatah history.
Foot screenings
Dr. William Roman will provide foot care for senior citizens at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wanatah American Legion.
