A Griffith woman died Monday afternoon in a crash that closed northbound Interstate 65 just south of the Lowell exit for three hours, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police.

According to state police:

Janet Klamm, 57, of Griffith, was driving north in the left lane in a gold 1999 Chevrolet when her car and a black 2007 Chevrolet, which was northbound in the right lane, sideswiped each other about noon Monday. Klamm lost control of the car, which left the road and rolled down an embankment. The car flipped and ejected Klamm. The car then crashed into a tree.

Janet Klamm's husband, Kenneth Klamm, was a passenger in the car and had to be extricated. Janet Klamm wore her seat belt, but she did not wear it properly. A dog in the car died at the scene.

Both Klamms were taken to St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, where Janet Klamm was pronounced dead of massive internal injuries. Kenneth Klamm complained of pain, abrasions and contusions.

The driver of the black Chevrolet, Sarah Aeppli, 35, of Rensselaer, pulled over onto the left shoulder. Aeppli and her two passengers were not injured. The damage to Aeppli's car was estimated at $2,000.
