HAMMOND | Cosmetology students at the Area Career Center of Hammond cut their teacher's hair, and that was just fine with her.

Audra Peterson, principal and director of career and technical education at the center, challenged students in the cosmetology program to persuade at least 10 people in January to donate 8 inches or more of hair to Locks for Love.

In return, she agreed to let them cut her hair this month. She's been growing it out for more than a year for this cause.

The students more than met their challenge. In fact, they were able to get 12 people to cut their hair and donate it.

Locks for Love uses the hair to make wigs for cancer victims and others who lose their hair. For information about how to donate hair or other ways to help the organization, visit www.locksoflove.org.

Students in the cosmetology program perform a variety of community service projects and will be present at the upcoming Pampered Women's show in Hammond next month.

Students see clients from the community from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Appointments are available by calling (219) 933-2428, ext. 2022. Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-serve basis. Nominal fees are charged for services.
