From prayer services and patriotic concerts to parades and wreath-laying ceremonies, the region pauses this Memorial Day weekend to remember those who have died in service to the country. Ceremonies include:
CALUMET CITY | A Memorial Day service honoring deceased military members of all wars will be held at noon Monday in the south parking lot of the American Legion Post at 950 Legion Drive.
It is presented by the Sons of the American Legion, the Ladies Auxiliaries and the Korean War Veterans Association. The firing squad from the Lansing Veterans Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard also will participate. A light lunch will be provided in the legion hall after the ceremony.
CRETE | The Memorial Day service is at 11 a.m. Monday at the Amvets War Memorial. A special guest speaker this year is Ron Koelling of Crete, an Army veteran. The parade starts at noon.
HOMEWOOD | Homewood's annual parade starts at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot on Dixie Highway, north of Ridge Road. It travels to the Homewood Veterans Memorial Park on Hardwood Avenue.
LANSING | The Lansing Veterans Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard conducts a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the memorial site, Glenwood-Lansing Road and Burnham Avenue at the Lansing Municipal Airport. This year's program will remember and honor those who served and veterans from the 1st Infantry Division on the 90th anniversary of its founding. The South Suburban Choral performs patriotic and spiritual songs. The traditional 21-gun salute and taps will follow wreath laying and raising of service flags.
LANSING | Edward Schultz American Legion Post 697 and Kenneth Brady VFW Post 7660 will have a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at the Memorial Junior High School on Ridge Road. There will not be a parade.
