DRUG BUST: Michigan man's arrest follows routine stop in Porter County
CROWN POINT | The tell-tale clues of possible drug smuggling were all there during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon, a Lake County Drug Interdiction officer said.
That's why Lake County police Detective Ed Kabella said he decided to ask Fernando Quezada-Perales, 45, of Holland, Mich., if he could search his 2000 Oldsmobile Select van.
"His story didn't make sense. ... He was fidgety and didn't know where he was going or what his business had been in Chicago. And he was sweating and his hands shaking," Kabella said.
Once the detective obtained consent to search the van, Kabella said he found inside 14 cardboard boxes filled with bales of 355 pounds of marijuana, all wrapped in plastic.
The street value of the drugs is about $1,000 a pound, or $355,000 in this case, Lake County Sheriff Rogelio "Roy" Dominguez said.
He said Quezada-Perales, who will be held in the Lake County Jail, faces felony charges in Porter County, where the arrest took place.
Kabella said Quezada-Perales was stopped for speeding about 12:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 near the Portage exit.
Dominguez said his department has a mutual aid agreement for arrests with sheriff's departments in Porter, LaPorte, Newton and Jasper counties.
