CELTIC MUSIC | Merrillville

Enjoy a night of traditional and Celtic music at 6:30 p.m. March 12 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. Traveler's Dream will charm listeners with its musicianship, wide array of instruments, and traditional music styles. The Jasper Foundation, Inc. and the Newton County Community Foundation remind high school seniors from Jasper and Newton counties that the scholarship deadline is noon March 14. Those who are applying for local scholarships must submit applications to the foundation office at 311 N. Van Rensselaer St., postmarked by March 12 to P.O. Box 295 Rensselaer, or turn them in to a high school guidance counselor by the date provided by the school. Any questions regarding the scholarships can be addressed by a high school guidance counselor or the foundation office.

Friends of the Crown Point Community Library will sponsor a bus trip to the Indianapolis Flower & Patio Show on March 12. LIFEGUARD TRAINING | Hobart

Lifeguard training classes will be held March 22 to April 12 at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Prerequisite testing must be successfully completed in advance by appointment only. Candidates will be taught the skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive two American Red Cross certifications, one for Lifeguard Training and First Aid valid for three years and another for CPR for the Professional Rescuer valid for one year.

DISEASES OF THE EYE | Wheatfield

"How To Live Successfully with Low Vision" will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon March 19 at the Wheatfield Library, 350 S. Bierma St. Verne Sandford, a professor emeritus of mathematics at Valparaiso University who has been legally blind for 66 years, will share his extensive research of diseases of the eye that result in low vision and explain two support groups in Valparaiso that he leads. Refreshments will be served, and registration is preferred so enough copies of handouts are available.

TRY YOGA | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department offers a new Evening Yoga class from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning March 25 at the Pruzin Center, 5750 Tyler St. This class is for beginners and experience yoga students. Yoga can improve many health conditions, including obesity, nervousness, anxiety, fatigue, mental clarity and circulation. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for nonresidents for six weekly sessions. Register by March 18 and receive a free one-day pass to Curves.

MAPLE SYRUP TOURS | Hobart

Groups of first graders through adults can make reservations for the Maple Syrup Time program at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Two-hour tours are available by appointment only at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through March 18. Cost is $1 per person, with a $20 minimum deposited to secure the reservation. Groups up to 120 can be accommodated.

TROOP DONATIONS | Highland

Cars Collision Canter, Porters Restoration, Glass America and Enterprise host a Support Our Troops Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 12 at Langel's Pizza, 2833 Highway Ave. The lunch is not open the public, but area residents may contribute through cash donations or bringing items during the lunch. Items that will be accepted include nonperishable food such as breakfast bars, hard candies individually wrapped, nuts, microwavable popcorn, tuna, salsa and canned dips and instant oatmeal. Personal items such as hand lotion, sun screen, Visine, dental floss, Desitin, toothbrushes, bath gels, throat lozenges, nonaerosol insect repellent, baby wipes and other items will be accepted. Travel sizes are good. Other suggestions are new magazines, AA and AAA batteries, yo-yos, books, beach balls, disposable cameras, electronic handheld games, decks of cards, travel-size games, crossword books and AT&T phone cards.
