HOBART: Police investigate two incidents of fraud
HOBART | Police are investigating two cases of people attempting to use fraudulent traveler's checks.
On Tuesday, a woman attempted to cash $7,000 worth of American Express and Visa traveler's checks about noon at Centier Bank, 7760 E. 37th Ave., Hobart police Detective Jeff White said.
He said the manager knew the checks were fraudulent and confirmed it after contacting American Express and Visa.
The manager told police the woman didn't seem concerned about the incident. She said she had to leave because her cab was waiting and then fled the scene, White said.
Another incident took place Wednesday when a woman attempted to use a fraudulent $100 American Express traveler's check at Don Pablo's, 2831 E 80th Ave., White said.
The woman presented the check to an employee at the restaurant about 5 p.m. and requested a $30 gift certificate, White said.
He said the employee wasn't sure how to handle the transaction and asked for help from a manager, who immediately knew the check was fraudulent.
White said when the woman created a scene and demanded her change when told the restaurant couldn't accept the check.
She eventually fled in a white Ford van with a male driver and passenger, White said.
He said police can go long periods of time without receiving a report of fraudulent checks being used, but when they do receive reports, they normally occur in "rashes."
