BACK TO SCHOOL | Munster
The Salvation Army holds its back to school program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9. The organization will help 300 children in kindergarten to sixth grade with school supplies and will provide a carnival with food for the children and their families. The following items are needed for the backpacks: No. 2 pencils, black and red pens, glue sticks, Elmer's glue, wide-ruled spiral notebooks, wide-ruled loose-leaf paper, folders with pockets, Fiskars scissors, colored pencils, highlighters, assignment notebooks, pencil boxes and plastic zipper pencil pouches. Cash donations will be accepted, as well as beverages and food for the carnival.

CLARK REGISTRATION | Hammond
Clark Middle-High School will register new students by appointment only Aug. 7 and 8. Bring the following items to the appointment: three proofs of residency (mortgage or closing papers, NIPSCO bill, water bill, current driver's license, check stub with current address, printout of public aid or medical card or printout from Social Security benefits), withdrawal papers from previous school, any special education documentation (if applicable), physical form and updated shot record, original birth certificate (no copies) and student's Social Security number. Schedule pickup for current students is 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m. as follows: seventh and eighth grade Aug. 4, ninth and 10th grade Aug. 5 and 11th and 12th grade Aug. 6.

VISIT SCHOOLHOUSE | Hammond
The Little Red Schoolhouse will have an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 3 in Hessville Park, 173rd Street and Kennedy Avenue. Buy a hot dog, chips and a drink for $1. Spend the day or a couple of hours. Activities include a clown with balloons, children's games and face painting all day. Membership opportunities will be available. Schoolhouse tours will be provided, and photos can be taken with the covered wagon for a small fee.
CROSSROADS PROGRAM | Highland
First Financial Bank's Crossroads Department hosts Premier World Discovery's trip preview of a Southwestern holiday at 6 p.m. July 30 at the bank, 2611 Highway Ave. Membership is not required to participate in the trip, a four-night stay in New Mexico during the holidays. Highlights include city tours of Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos, Indiana Pueblo Cultural center, Old Town Albuquerque and shopping excursion.

The Gary Public Library holds a used DVD sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays in August at the main library, 220 W. Fifth Ave. The DVDs cost $3 for one or $5 for two, cash only. ICE CENTER | Dyer
Midwest Training and Ice Center will conduct a free month of tots class Tuesdays in August during open skate. The free class is open to preschoolers 3 to 5 years old and is an introduction to the world of ice skating. Children learn the basic skills of skating while developing balance and coordination with an emphasis on group participation and fun. Advance registration is required.

VISIT GARDENS | Schererville
Advance Financial Federal Credit Union's Better Than 50 Club invites the public for a visit to the world-renowned, 385-acre Chicago Botanic Gardens on Aug. 20. Reservations are required because space is limited. Adult family members and friends may be invited. The site features 23 display gardens and three native habitats, uniquely situated on nine islands surrounded by lakes. The bus leaves at 10 a.m. from the credit union's office at 31 W. Lincoln Highway and returns about 3 p.m. The cost is $40 for club members and $45 for others, which includes a luxury charter bus, parking, a professional guided tram tour, lunch in a reserved private dining area and a 10 percent discount in the garden shop. Reservations and payments must be received by Aug. 6.

Indoor picnic | Homewood
The Illiana Jewish Genealogical Society will hold its annual indoor picnic from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Marie Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Everyone is invited. The fee is $8 per person. Cold cuts and salad will be provided, but attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.
