EDUCATION NOTEBOOK: Wagoner Elementary seeks engineering firm
Two electoral boards are expected to meet today to hear objections filed against the nominating petitions of all nine Hoover-Schrum Elementary District 157 School Board candidates.
An electoral board made up of board Vice President Kenneth Taylor, board member Phyllis Thomas and a public member selected by the Cook County Circuit Court is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. to hear objections filed against the three candidates vying for election to two, two-year terms, board Secretary Terri Morrison said.
A separate electoral board consisting of Taylor, Morrison and board President Natalie Barnes will meet at 3 p.m. to hear objections filed against the six candidates running for three, four-year terms, Morrison said.
Both electoral board meetings will be held in the board room of the district office, 1255 Superior Ave., Calumet City.
Attorney Chris Welch, of the law firm James J. Roche & Associates, could not be reached for comment.
Objections have been filed by parent Bozana Morales and resident Susan Henke to the petitions of incumbents Shatakia Head, Leslie Durr and Vera Brooks and newcomer Christel Lewis.
Objections also have been filed by Durr to the petitions of Morrison and newcomers Ruben Rizo, John Kresich and Kelsy Cowley and by Head to the petitions of Barnes.
Durr, Lewis, Cowley, Rizo, Brooks and Kresich are seeking election to three, four-year terms. Morrison, Head and Barnes are running for two, two-year terms.
D.168 taking applications
So far, Sauk Village Elementary District 168's search for a director of instructional services has drawn interest from about eight or nine applicants, Superintendent Rudy Williams said.
Applications are being accepted for the position until 4 p.m. Feb. 28.
No dates have yet been set for interviewing candidates, Williams said.
He told School Board members last week he would like the new administrator to begin work as soon as possible, but he did not provide a specific proposed starting date.
D.168 plans roadwork
District 168 is considering entering into an engineering agreement with Robinson Engineering Ltd. for improvements at Wagoner Elementary School.
Being proposed is work to improve student drop-off at Wagoner.
Joseph Nordman, senior project manager with Robinson Engineering, said the proposed work includes building a new road from the northeast corner of the existing parking, over the ditch to the extension of Merrill Avenue, and then south to 215th Place and constructing a culvert for the existing ditch on the east side of the school property.
Also proposed is widening the existing "maintenance path" that connects the west and east parking lots so the pavement will accommodate school buses; installing permanent signs designating one-way traffic on 215th Place during approved hours; applying pavement markings to all designated crosswalks along 215th Place and making sidewalk improvements at designated locations.
Board honors retired officer
The District 168 School Board last week honored retired Sauk Village police officer Terry Cates for his service to the district and its students.
The board presented Cates with an engraved watch.
Cates was the Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer when the DARE program was in place.
