VALPARAISO | The teen who had two run-ins with police after being elected to the Porter Township Board had a third run-in over the weekend, this time getting arrested on drug and alcohol charges.
David Wichlinski, 18, of Porter Township, was arrested at 8 p.m. Sunday on misdemeanor charges of underage drinking and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Valparaiso police, acting on a complaint of a possible drunken driver in the drive-through at the McDonald's restaurant at 2002 Calumet Ave., arrived to find the vehicle exiting the drive-through and parking in a handicapped parking spot.
Police said two young men were in the car but the passenger, Wichlinski, began staggering and then running away despite police telling him to return to the car. Police said they caught him outside the nearby Premier Grill and determined he'd been drinking.
Police said the driver of the car, Ryan Kubal, 20, of Valparaiso, had also been drinking. He was arrested on an underage drinking charge.
Police reported finding a marijuana smoking pipe in the car. Kubal told police it belonged to Wichlinski.
Wichlinski was ticketed for provocation in February after he was accused of displaying his middle finger to two Porter County Sheriff's Department officers near Boone Grove High School, where he was attending classes. The ticket was later dropped. In April, police reported finding a marijuana seed in Wichlinski's vehicle outside the school, but he was not charged.
Wichlinski, the son of former Porter Township Trustee Robert Wichlinski, won a seat on the Porter Township Board in last fall's election and took office Jan. 1. He was unavailable for comment.
