VALPARAISO | A first-grade teacher at Cooks Corners Elementary School was arrested Thursday morning and charged with public intoxication.

Sharon Duerring, 49, of Valparaiso was arrested at 10:30 a.m. after police were called to the school at 358 Bullseye Lake Road, according to police. A portable breath test showed her blood alcohol concentration to be 0.20, more than two times the legal limit.

The teacher had two cans of beer in her purse at the time of her arrest, police said.

Duerring was immediately removed from the classroom and police were called to the school when officials there suspected she was intoxicated.

She was escorted from the school by police and taken to the Porter County Jail.

Duerring was given a trespass warning not to return to the school and her school keys were confiscated, police said.
