GARY | Bloody clothes, crumpled cash and jewelry were left piled on the floor of a Gary liquor store after a daylight carjacking and shooting Thursday afternoon off Broadway on Gary's south side.
A man shot a 24-year-old Hammond man in the chest and stole the victim's red Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle about 2:45 p.m. at 46th Avenue and Massachusetts Street, said Gary police Cmdr. Samuel Roberts. The victim had not died of his wounds Thursday night.
Police had not made any arrests, and the SUV was not recovered Thursday night, Roberts said.
The man told officers he was shot when the gunman tried to rob him of his jewelry, but Roberts said investigators are not sure the man's statement was "accurate."
"Police are looking for other motives," Roberts said.
The man told police he was parked on Massachusetts when the gunman approached the vehicle and told him to give up his jewelry, Roberts said. The man told officers he jumped from the SUV and ran, Roberts said. He was shot once in the chest. The man told investigators the gunman wore a black hooded sweat shirt and a black mask, Roberts said.
After the shooting, the man ran to C & M Liquors at Broadway and 46th Avenue. Paramedics responded to the bloodied victim at the liquor store. Investigators still were bagging evidence in the store about 4 p.m. as inconvenienced customers accumulated outside the store.
