GOING GREEN | Lowell
Help decorate the farm for Christmas at Going Green for the Holiday, a program from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 22 at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road. Enjoy a cup of hot cider in the upper barn while helping make enchanting green reindeer. Then travel back in time to the pioneer cabin to decorate for Christmas Eve and to the schoolhouse for the Christmas pageant. Help decorate inside and out of the main house with fresh greens. HOLIDAY READING | Munster
South Shore Arts' 15th Annual Holiday Reading with John Cain will be held Nov. 18 at South Shore Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. Cain will read "A Christmas Story" by Jean Shepard. Doors open at 11 a.m., lunch is at noon and the reading will follow. Tickets are $40 per person, and $35 for members. Last year's event sold out.

Senior citizens are invited to a Senior Social hosted by the Lowell Parks and Recreation Department and the Lowell Public Library at 11 a.m. Nov. 20 at the library, 1505 E. ROASTED PORK | Merrillville
Good Shepherd Council 10811 of the Knights of Columbus will host an oven-roasted boneless pork loin dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at Our Lady of Consolation Parish Activity Center, 8303 Taft St., Merrillville. The menu also includes mashed potatoes, soup, salad, bread, dessert and coffee or punch. Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for preteens and free for preschoolers. Hot dog, chips and beverage are available for $2.

Single moms | Highland
Outreach to Single Moms will hold its bimonthly meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at Suburban Bible Church, 3010 41st St. They will be making bows out of recycled magazines and banners to decorate our homes with during this holiday season. Free child care is provided for children 15 and younger. Single moms who care for children 25 and younger are welcome to join.

American Red Cross blood drives will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 19 at the Curves, 186 S. West St., Crown Point, and from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Nov. 19 at Pinnacle Hospital, 9301 Connecticut Drive. Donors should be at least 17 (or 16 with written, parental/guardian consent), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health.

Snowflake bazaar | Dyer, Hammond
St. Margaret Mercy Hospital's annual Snowflake Bazaar will be celebrated Nov. 19 at the Dyer campus, U.S. 30, and Nov. 21 at the Hammond campus, 5454 Hohman Ave. There will be a raffle, bake sale, basket and Christmas wreath auction and purses being sold. All funds will be used for the Catherine McAuley Clinic, which provides health care to children and adults without medical insurance or government assistance.

For the past several years, Faith Church has hosted the Gobbler Classic 5K Fun Run/Walk at 7 a.m. Thanksgiving morning to promote healthy bodies, healthy families, and a healthy community. Everyone is invited to participate in this year's Gobbler Classic 5K at 7 a.m. Nov. 27 at Faith Church, 100 81st Ave. Whether running for a trophy or just walking for fun, the first 200 registrants are guaranteed a T-shirt, but everyone is invited to enjoy the goodies at the hospitality tent. The $15 registration fee (before Nov. 23) will be donated to the St. John Township Food Pantry to support disadvantaged families. Late registration fee is $25. Adults are invited to view "Midnight Clear," the Morning Movie selection at 10 a.m. Nov. 20 at the Wheatfield Library, 350 S. Bierma St. This PG-13 rated film features Stephen Baldwin and K. Callan in a story about several people who are facing depression, but find that life is definitely worth living after crossing paths and experiencing random acts of kindness. HOLIDAY BUS TRIP | Crown Point
Friends of the Crown Point Library have organized a bus trip to downtown Chicago on Dec. 3. Passengers will be dropped off and picked up near Macy's on State Street. Departure from the library will be at 9 a.m. and the group will leave Chicago at 3 p.m., arriving back at the library by 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person at the Crown Point Library Circulation Desk. Payment must be received to reserve a seat. Due to the popularity of this bus trip, no refunds will be given after Nov. 24.

PARADE OF LIGHTS | Cedar Lake
Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce holds its 10th annual Parade of Lights at 7 p.m. Nov. 29 starting from Hanover Central High School's parking lot around the north end of the lake to the Cedar Lake Boys and Girls Club, 13000 Fairbanks St., where prizes will be awarded, refreshments will be served and Santa Claus will greet children and hand out candy. Lighted floats and vehicles will line up at 5:30. Prizes are $300, $200, $100, $75 and $25, with separate youth organization prizes. Entry deadline is Nov. 20.

DIABETES AWARENESS | Gary
Northwest Indiana Health Disparity Initiative-Region I, along with The Office of Minority
Health, Indiana State Department of Health and the Statewide Minority Diabetes Alliance, will host a diabetes awareness conference entitled Too Sweet for Your Own Good from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Genesis Conference Center, One Genesis Plaza. The conference will feature regional physicians, clinicians and educators providing state-of-the-art information on disparities in treatment, living with and preventing diabetes. Conference admission and lunch is free to all attendees. Registration is required.
