Little Calumet River poses threat; I-94 flooding could delay commute
Many of the region's busiest roads and highways remained underwater Sunday night, and police and public works officials gave no assurance the roads would be ready for travel this morning.
Interstate 94 was closed from Torrence Avenue in Illinois to Cline Avenue. The road was also closed between 130th and 147th streets.
"Everybody would just be overjoyed if the water goes down overnight," said Mike Claffey, Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman.
"But there's just no guarantee of that."
A foot of water turned Calumet Avenue in Munster into a marshy tributary of the Little Calumet River. Drivers should expect limited options today for efficient travel in Munster.
"There's no expectations that any of the through streets will be open," said Munster Councilman Michael Mellon
Crews were focusing Sunday night on confining the Little Calumet River within its levees, Mellon said. Response directors were waiting for the river's expected crest at 1 a.m., Mellon said.
"The river is the primary concern right now," Mellon said.
The Indiana and Illinois state patrols also were waiting for river waters to recede. The two closures on I-94 led to a traffic nightmare Sunday, as drivers cobbled together back road routes and open roads throbbed with run-off traffic.
Munster absorbed the heaviest dousing, and drivers should look for routes around the town's main roads today, Mellon said.
"They should be working around those tomorrow," Mellon said.
