HOBART | School Board members approved an agreement with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Thursday night, granting the district permission to name any of their athletic areas "The Brickyard."

Superintendent Peggy Buffington said the agreement allows the use of the name except in instances where the district might make a profit expressly from using the name and also another important caveat.

"We are unable to open a racetrack," Buffington said.

Board member Karen Robbins said she's heard from residents concerned the new football stadium will not bear the 'Brickie Bowl' name its predecessor has in favor of 'The Brickyard.' Robbins said such a decision hasn't been made.

"Nothing has been named 'the Brickyard' yet," Robbins said.

Board President Terry Butler said a previously-established naming committee will look at all the athletic facilities at the new high school and determine if the name should be used. By approving the agreement, it just gives the district permission to use the name, should it desire to do so.

In other board business, members approved plans to renovate the current Hobart High School for use as the district's middle school. The $11 million project includes upgrading science rooms and athletic areas, will give the building a different exterior look and addresses bus safety issues. The project will also include new computer networking, after a consultant expressed concerns over the network's capabilities after splicing it throughout the building, as the original plans stated. Buffington said they'll have to watch the budget as the re-cabling wasn't part of the original concept.

Also, after some confusion last month over the time it will take to complete the renovation, project managers are now confident they can have middle school students in the building for the start of the 2009-10 school year.
