SOUTH HOLLAND | The South Suburban College Foundation has initiated its scholarship fundraising campaign and is seeking donations for the 2008 Donor Drive through the end of the year.

Individuals may donate to the General Scholarship Fund or any specific scholarship fund at any level, or choose to sponsor a personal or memorial scholarship with a donation of $750 or more. All Donor Drive donations benefit SSC student scholarships.

The majority of scholarship recipients do not qualify for any other type of financial assistance.

In carrying out its mission and purpose, the South Suburban College Foundation awarded its highest number of scholarship awards for the largest total dollar amount with 181 scholarships for $122,600 in 2008. Scholarships are awarded annually at the Academic Achievement Reception in May for the following summer, fall and spring semesters.

In addition to traditional scholarships, the foundation awarded $7,479.40 in Carol Manning Student Assistance Funds to 34 students so far this year. The Carol Manning Student Assistance Fund is awarded during registration prior to each fall and spring semester.

The foundation has now awarded 1,500 scholarships for $800,000 to students since 1989.

The foundation established the Carol Manning Student Assistance Fund in 2001 to help the college's neediest students continue pursuing their education with financial assistance for books, tuition and other special needs. To date, $73,589 has been awarded to 256 needy students through the Carol Manning Fund.

The South Suburban College Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization chartered in the state of Illinois. Established in 1974, the foundation is governed by a board of directors, currently 30 of Chicago's south suburban business, civic and community leaders.
