CEDAR LAKE | A Cedar Lake woman was charged Monday with two felonies after allegedly stabbing her husband in the arm with a butcher knife and burning his nose with a lit cigarette in front of their school-aged daughter, court records show.

Dawn Garcia, 41, faces charges of domestic battery and battery in connection with the fight.

Garcia's husband told police the couple was arguing about money after drinking in the garage. Garcia allegedly followed him into the kitchen of their home and started slapping him in the face, according to a report by Cedar Lake police. She then grabbed a knife and started swinging it at him as she continued to yell, police said.

Garcia told police she grabbed the knife to defend herself against her husband, who reportedly threw a bottle at her while they were in the garage before chasing her into their home.

One of the couple's children ran to a neighbor's house to call police.

Garcia was taken into custody and held at Lake County Jail.
