Cafe Fest | South Holland
Bobbie Saltzman and the South Suburban College Playhouse will host the fifth annual week-long Open Mic event from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today to Nov. 6 in the college's cafeteria at 15800 State St. Songs, poetry, dramatic readings are just some of what can be seen during the Fest. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to perform and there is no charge for admission.

Audubon Society | South Holland
Sand Ridge Audubon Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Sand Ridge Nature Center, 15890 Paxton Ave. Following a short business meeting, the speaker will be Annette Prince of the Bird Colliwion Monitors group. She will talk about her organization does to help minimize losses to the bird population. There is no charge to attend and all are welcome.

Annual dinner | Hobart
Hobart's historic buildings is the topic of the program at the Hobart Historical Society's annual dinner. It will take place Nov. 6 at River Pointe Country Club. Bob Green will be the speaker. The dinner will open with a cash bar at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at the Hobart Historical Society Museum, 706 E. 4th St. Those wishing to attend should buy tickets or make reservations in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door.

AMVETS Post 15 Auxiliary is hosting a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at the post home, 13335 Morse St. Order Alaskan pollack for $6.50, butterfly shrimp for $8.50 or a combo plate for $7.50. Dinners include cole slaw or cottage cheese, potato, roll and butter. Children's portions available and carry-outs are 50 cents extra. Proceeds will fund auxiliary projects and charities.

Merrillville Adult Education GED two-day test dates are 4:45 to p.m. Nov. 10 and 11 and Nov. 17 and 18 at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place. BENEFIT DINNER | Highland
Friends of Steve Carpenter are hosting a benefit dinner for the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 7 at Highland Elks Lodge , 3120 45th Ave. Carpenter was diagnosed with stage four adenocarcinoma in July and is currently in the care of hospice. He had been self-employed prior to his diagnosis, Proceeds will be used for medical expenses and the care of his family.

Advance Financial Federal Credit Union invites its members
and neighbors across Lake County to help reduce hunger by donating to its annual food drive benefiting The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. U.S. 30 in Schererville, 4035 Alder Street in East Chicago and 1544 W. 36th Ave. in Gary through Nov. 15.
