GARY | A 17-year-old Gary boy was found shot to death in a parked car early Wednesday in Gary, five years after the boy's father was gunned down in Gary.

Clayton Bohanon Jr., of the 300 block of Rutledge Street, was found shot to death at 12:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Clark Street, according to a spokeswoman for the Lake County coroner's office. The death was ruled a homicide.

Gary police found Bohanon with multiple gunshot wounds to the head in the passenger seat of a 1988 blue four-door Oldsmobile Delta, said Gary police Cmdr. Samuel Roberts. Bohanon was holding a revolver when police found him, and there were several shell casings around the car, Roberts said.

In June 2003, Clayton Bohanon Sr., 38, was shot to death in Gary over a $25 bet in the city's Ambridge neighborhood.

Estella Bohanon - the elder Clayton Bohanon's mother - said Wednesday she felt awful about her grandson's death. The son rode his bike to the scene when his father was shot, Estella Bohanon said. The father's death was "tough" for the boy, she said. The boy acted out. He ran away.

Clayton Bohanon Jr. graduated high school at 16 and attended Purdue University Calumet, Estella Bohanon said. He was studying criminal justice. Estella Bohanon lamented Gary's violence.

"I don't know what these young kids are going to do in this city to try and survive," she said.

Investigators have leads in the case, and witnesses told police they saw a male suspect walk away from the car, Roberts said. Roberts said he did not know who owned the car.

William McFerson Jr., of Gary, was convicted of murder, attempted murder and battery in connection with Clayton Bohanon's death.

Attempts to reach Gary detectives Wednesday night were not successful.
