JAYCEES | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Jaycees will meet at 7 p.m. April 3 at South Bend Chocolate Café, 57 Franklin St. The public is encouraged to attend and participate. The Valparaiso Jaycees, a Chapter of the United States Junior Chamber, is a leadership training organization for young people ages 18 to 40.

WINE TASTING | Valparaiso
The wine tasting dinner to benefit the International Program at the Valparaiso Family YMCA will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. April 6 at Don Quijote's Restaurante. The cost is $75 per person, which includes a five-course meal and a variety of wines for tasting. Enjoy an exhibit of the work of Chile. All event proceeds will support The Valparaiso Family YMCA International Department. The International Department supports a partnership between the Valparaiso, Indiana YMCA and the Valparaiso, Chile YMCA. These activities include an internship program with Valparaiso University, a staff exchange, and financial assistance benefiting communities in Valparaiso, Chile, South America. The Valpo Swim Club, age group swimming for children 5-15, spring/summer season will begin April 14. A free skills evaluation for potential swimmers will be donated April 10. A one-week trial for new swimmers begins April 14.

HORSE OWNER'S WORKSHOP | Valparaiso
Jake's Feed will host the Purina Mills horse owner's workshop with registration beginning at 6:15 p.m. April 16 at the Porter County Expo Center. This workshop will give horse enthusiasts the opportunity to get first hand information and interact with equine specialists and professionals. Featured speakers include Dr. Katie Young, consulting equine nutritionist, and Dr. Jerry Rodenbarger, veterinarian. LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION | LaPorte
The LaPorte YMCA offers a lifeguard certification course. Hours are 1 to 7 p.m April 7; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 8; 1 to 7 p.m. April 9; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 10 and noon to 8 p.m. April 12 at the Y, 901 Michigan Ave. CPR will be taught Saturday and can be a stand-alone course.Must be at least 15 to enroll and must participate all four days. CHOLESTEROL TESTS | Hebron
Hebron Public Library, 201 W. Sigler St., will offer total cholesterol screenings from 10 a.m. to noon April 3. Conducted by Porter Hospital Road to Wellness program, the cholesterol screenings require a 10-hour fast. The cost is $30, and screenings will be performed by appointment only. BEGINNING SPANISH | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Department of Parks and Recreation offers new Beginning Spanish classes for youth and adults. The youth class is for children in third to sixth grade and will meet twice a week from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 8 through May 8, at Banta Center. Children will be introduced to vocabulary and dialogue in an exciting and interactive atmosphere. The youth fee is $80 for residents and $90 for nonresidents. The adult class is for those 16 years old and older and will meet once per week from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, April 10 through May 8, at Banta Center. Participants will learn practical Spanish in a relaxed, small-class environment. The adult fee is $50 for residents and $60 for nonresidents. The Banta Center is at 605 Beech St.

SUMMER CAMPS | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Family YMCA offers a variety of summer camps. Preschool camp is for ages 3-5; Camp Little Bear is for children entering kindergarten and first grade; Summer Adventure Days 1 is for kids entering second and third grades; Summer Adventure Days 2 is for those entering fourth through sixth grades and Teen Camp is for teens entering seventh through ninth grades. Sumer will be filled with field trips, crafts and games. Costs for camps vary depending on the program.

BALLROOM DANCE | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Parks Department has partnered with United Dance Arts of Valparaiso to offer new adult ballroom dance classes. Beginner will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, March 12 through April 9, at United Dance Arts of Valparaiso studio, 55 Morthland Drive. Fee is $120 for couples and $78 for singles.

SOCCER | Valparaiso
The Valparaiso Family YMCA will help kids develop skills and learn the basics of soccer. Kids will be placed into two divisions: 4-5-year-olds, and 6-7-year-olds. The clinic will run Tuesday evenings. They will practice and work on skills and knowledge as well as participate in games. Dates are April 9 through May 7.

NEW ART | Valparaiso
New works of art created by seven Valparaiso University art faculty members will be featured in the VU Faculty Exhibition at Brauer Museum of Art this spring. The exhibition of about 40 works in a variety of media will open April 2 and be displayed through May 11. An opening reception with the faculty artists takes place at 7 p.m. April 4 in the museum and is free and open to the public. Each of the faculty artists in the exhibit will comment upon the works he or she selected. The VU Faculty Exhibition will feature photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media, drawing and other media.Participating in the exhibition are Robert Sirko, associate professor of art; Aimee Tomasek, assistant professor of art; Sarah Jantzi, assistant professor of art; Kevin Firme, adjunct assistant professor of art; Michele Corazzo, adjunct assistant professor of art; Elizabeth Wuerffel, adjunct assistant professor of art; and Gregg Hertzlieb, director of Brauer Museum.

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL | Valparaiso
Valparaiso High School Key Club is sponsoring a wheelchair basketball game at 1:30 p.m. April 13 in the Valparaiso High School gym. Doors open at 1 p.m. and concessions will be sold. Tickets are $5 at the door. All money raised at this event will go toward purchasing two basketball wheelchairs. The Chicago Wheelchair Bulls will play an exhibition game then play against teams composed of teachers and students. The event will feature - and benefit - Valparaiso resident Ben Mortensen.
