SLEDDING HILLS | Lake County

Sledding hills will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 1 through March 31 (when adequate snow cover allows) at Oak Ridge Prairie County Park, 301 S. Colfax St., Griffith, and Lemon Lake County Park, 6322 W. 133rd Ave., Crown Point. Gate fee when gatekeeper is on duty.

Bring your own tube or plastic sled. No metal or wood sleds with runners and no ski boards allowed. Call the park sites for updates on the snow conditions. Hills are only open when there is an adequate snow base.

Craft show | Highland

An arts and craft show with vendor fair is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 29 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 30 at Lincoln Center, 2450 Lincoln St. There will be doll clothes, afghans, handmade jewelry, bean bag games, glass art, photo albums and more.

HOLIDAY STORIES | Hobart

Toddlers 2 and 3, accompanied by a caregiver, will hear and participate in holiday stories, songs, and finger plays at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 4 and 18 at the Lake County Public Library's Hobart branch, 100 N. Main St. This half-hour program will also include making a simple craft. Call to register.

SHOOTING CLINIC | Hobart

A six-session basketball shooting clinic that will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Dec. 3 at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Long-time basketball coach Ron Divjak, author of "Mastering the Jump Shot," will be the instructor for boys and girls 10 and older. Cost is $35 for Y members and $45 for nonmembers who register by Dec. 3.

Open house | Gary

A Centennial Open House is from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 1 at the main branch of Gary Public Library, 220 W. Fifth Ave. There will be souvenirs, refreshments, displays and activities. The library first opened to the public Dec. 1, 1908.

EVERGREEN WREATH | Merrillville

Merrillville Adult Education will be offering an Evergreen Wreath Course from 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 10 at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place.

Attendees will be provided with a variety of fresh cut evergreens, pine cones and berries and the instructor will assist participants in assembling a 24" wreath that will last throughout the holiday season. Course fee is $25. Registration is required.

Belly dance | Highland

Registration is now open for Intro to Belly Dance classes for adults and teens. Classes are at 6 and 7 p.m. Friday evenings and begin in January through the Highland Parks Department. No previous dance experience is required. All shapes and sizes are welcome.

After hours | Calumet City

Calumet City Chamber of Commerce will host a business after hours Dec. 4 at Chili's, 1580 Torrence Ave. Chamber members and their friends are invited to attend and mix and mingle and network from 5 to 7 p.m.

Special Mass | Hammond

Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena, Mass and celebration is at 6 p.m. Dec. 4 to 12 in the St. John Bosco chapel, 7113 Columbia Ave. Pray the rosary. Nonperishable food items will be accepted for the St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry. At 7 p.m. Dec. 12, there will be a Mass to honor the Blessed Mother. It will include mariachis, presentation of roses, dancers and a brief reenactment. Afterward there will be a celebration in the cafeteria. All are welcome. Dinners are $7 for adults and $6 for children.

Concert | Hobart

The Rusty Pipes Community Band will perform its annual holiday concert filled with holiday classics at 3 p.m. Dec. 7 in Hobart High School Auditorium, 86 E. Eighth St. Tickets available at the door are $3 for adults. Students in grades 12 and younger are free. Admission price includes holiday treats shared with the band after the concert.

Modular train show | Calumet City

Calumet City Historical Society will host its sixth annual Lionel modular train show and visit with Santa from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7 at the museum, 760 Wentworth Ave. Rochelle Pennington, author of "Christmas Tree Ship" will give a presentation at 1 p.m. Dec. 7. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Holiday parade | Hammond

Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. and the Hammond Holiday Parade Committee will host the 2008 Hammond Holiday Parade beginning at 10 a.m. Dec. 6. The parade starts at Gavit High School, 1670 175th St. It heads east to Indianapolis Boulevard, turns north on Indianapolis and ends at 169th Street.
