Police say all defendants were members of street gang, motive was personal
CROWN POINT | Two sons of East Chicago police officers were among seven people charged this week with the 2007 execution-style slaying of 19-year-old Dominique Keesee, the Lake County sheriff said Tuesday.
Anthony Rias II, 18, Khalid Jackson-Bey, 20, and Mrtyrone Metcalf, 17, were each charged with murder and murder in the perpetration of robbery, Lake County Criminal Court records say.
Jamal Hillsman, 19, Edgar Covington, 18, Jermaine Hammonds, 19, and Haneef Jackson-Bey, 19, each were charged with felony assisting a criminal.
An eighth person is expected to be charged soon, Lake County police said.
Rias and Hillsman are the sons of East Chicago police Officer Anthony Rias and Sgt. Guan Hillsman, Lake County police said. Both police officers were unavailable Tuesday for comment.
"This case is not over," Sheriff Rogelio "Roy" Dominguez said Tuesday. "We believe there are other persons of interest in this case."
Keesee was shot 14 times in broad daylight the afternoon of Nov. 16, 2007, in his own East Chicago home, police said.
His body was found "laying face up in his kitchen, soiled with blood and riddled with wounds to his upper torso and head," court records say.
Keesee's girlfriend discovered his body.
The charges filed this week are the result of a cooperative investigation by Lake County police, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and other region agencies. About 30 detectives questioned witnesses and looked for evidence in the investigation, police said.
The East Chicago Police Department sought an independent investigation of Keesee's slaying.
Rias offered the other six defendants -- who are alleged to be leaders of the East Chicago-based Players Circle Family street gang -- $7,000 each for the "hit" on Keesee, court records say. They also were promised a portion of drugs they believed would be in the home, police allege.
Rias' reason for targeting Keesee was personal, police have said, but officials would not elaborate Tuesday on the specific motive.
Keesee's sister, April Hackett, cried Tuesday as she spoke about her brother's death.
"You don't know what this means to us," said Hackett, who had pleaded with Lake County police to take the case.
All seven defendants were being held in the Lake County Jail on Tuesday.
Police officials said they believe the arrests of seven of the Players Circle Family gang's top members will substantially slow or halt the gang's activity.
