1st Source branch hit twice in less than 3 months
CHESTERTON | The 1st Source Bank branch on Indian Boundary Road in Chesterton was robbed Monday morning, marking the second robbery at the branch in less than three months.
Chesterton police said a man entered the bank about 10 a.m. and presented a note demanding money and implying he had a gun. After getting an undisclosed amount of money, the man ran to a light blue or green minivan and drove away. Nobody was injured.
Chesterton police, assisted by Porter town and Porter county units, searched the area, but didn't immediately locate a suspect. The FBI also provided assistance.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 30s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 165 to 185 pounds. He had dark hair and wore blue jeans, a gray zippered hooded sweat shirt, a tan safari hat and sunglasses.
Chesterton Detective Lt. David Cincoski said it is not believed this suspect is the same one who committed the Jan. 25 robbery at the same bank branch. That robbery was committed by a thin white male with blond hair.
However, police are looking into whether Monday's robbery is related to other robberies in the region.
In Valparaiso, First National Bank, which is now owned by 1st Source, was robbed four times in less than four months in 2007, the last robbery occurring in late October. The suspect in all four robberies was described as an Hispanic male who is in his 20s, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 pounds. The robberies are unsolved.
The investigation continues into Monday's robbery, and anyone with information is asked to call Chesterton police at (219) 926-1136. The bank is just east of Ind. 49 at 800 Indian Boundary Road, having moved from 500 Indian Boundary Road.
