MUNSTER
Portion of Camelia Avenue closed to traffic Monday
A portion of Camelia Avenue will be closed to traffic beginning at 7 a.m. Monday while BP Amoco repairs its transmission line in town.
The affected portion is just eat of Columbia Avenue. Motorists are advised to use Larch or Heather drives as alternate routes.
An advisory from the town said the repairs could take three or four days to complete.
HAMMOND
City offers free document shredding
Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. and the Hammond Recycling Department are offering free shredding of unwanted confidential documents.
The service offered to all Lake County residents is done between 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Hammond Recycling Center, 625 Conkey St.
Appointments are required. Call the Recycling Center at (219) 853-6622.

Library board meets in regular session Tuesday
The Whiting Public Library Board of Trustees meets in regular session at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the library, 1735 Oliver St.

The Whiting Redevelopment Commission meets in executive session at 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss litigation that is either pending or has been threatened and/or to discuss the purchase or lease of real property.
MUNSTER
Sisterhood holds Women's Seder March 25
The Sisterhood of Temple Beth-El invite women of the area to join them for the Women's Seder at 3 p.m. March 25 at Temple Beth-El, 10001 Columbia Ave., Munster.
The Seder recalls the journey from slavery to freedom through the eyes of women. Traditional food will be served. Cost is $10 per person. Reservations must be made by March 19.
HAMMOND
Trip retraces Underground Railroad route
Students and community members are invited to take a historical journey that retraces one of the routes of the Underground Railroad, May 4-5.
The Purdue University Calumet Ethnic Studies program is hosting "The Train to Freedom" journey. Cost is $210 per person. The deadline to register is April 1.
The trip will include stops in Battle Creek and Detroit, Mich., and Dresden, Ontario.
Roy Hamilton, Purdue Calumet assistant vice chancellor for educational opportunity programs, said the trip is intended to be educational and enjoyable.
Participants will travel on a tour bus equipped with monitors and DVD/VCR. Cost of the trip includes four meals (two breakfasts and two dinners), guided tours and one-night hotel accommodations based on double room occupancy.
Individuals can make reservations by paying the $210 fee by phone (219) 989-2986 or 800/HI-PURDUE, ext. 2986, using VISA or MasterCard or by delivering a check made payable to Purdue University to the Purdue University Calumet Student Services Business Office in the Fitness & Recreation Center, located at the south end of campus, south of 173rd Street.
