CHICAGO (AP) -- Former Gov. George Ryan's request to remain free on bond while he asks the U.S. Supreme Court to take his case was denied by a federal appeals court Wednesday, meaning he likely will have to go to prison next week.
Ryan still had a faint chance of getting his bond extended by the Supreme Court and was expected to make that request quickly.
The appeals court said in a five-page opinion that Ryan and co-defendant Larry Warner had shown no "reasonable probability" that the nation's highest court would take their case or reverse their convictions.
"The voluminous record here demonstrates that the appellants were guilty of the crimes with which they were charged," Judge Diane P. Wood wrote in the opinion issued by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
