BENEFIT GOLF | Hobart
Dunes Leathernecks Detachment of the Marine Corps League will sponsor its fifth annual golf outing Aug. 23 at Duck Creek Golf Course, 636 N. 700 West. The four-player scramble format will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Cost is $75 per person and includes greens fee, use of cart, door prizes, beer, pop, food on course and a pork chop dinner. Proceeds go to the Porter County Food Pantries. Hole sponsorships are being accepted at $50 a hole. Registration deadline is Aug. 14.

MAGIC MEAL | Crown Point
"Table for One: Magic Meal" will be presented by the Lake County Cooperative Extension Service at 1 p.m. today in the 4-h Building at the Lake county Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. Consumer Family Sciences educator Corinne Powell will present this free program on how to scale down recipes and limit the number of ingredients for a flavorful meal. Youngsters can learn and have fun as members of the Kids Nature Club sponsored by the Lowell Public Library at its Shelby branch, 23321 Shelby Road. A book walk and pinata activity will be held at 10:30 a.m. today. Also at Shelby, children can bring a sack lunch and play water games at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 7. Student registration will be held Aug. 6, 7, 8 and 11 in the commons area at North Newton Junior-Senior High School, 1641 W. 250 North. New students can register from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6, students with last names starting in A to L can register from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 7, students with last names starting in M to Z can register from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 and all students can register from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 11. Students new to the school district should call Linda Anderson at (219) 285-2252, ext. 214 for an appointment. Past book rental and bills must be paid before new fees can be paid. Each student must complete an Internet Consent Form, available at school and at registration. For a student parking permit, students should bring their driver's license, car information and complete an application due before school begins. The fist day of school is Aug. 15.

Hobart High School Soccer Booster Club invites the public to a Soccer Celebration Day on Aug. 9 at Mundell Field on Wisconsin Street. A car wash will be held by the HHS soccer teams from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a cost of $5 per car or a donation. An Alumni Soccer Game will be held at 3 p.m.; all graduates of Hobart High School are welcome to participate in this co-ed soccer game. Bring shin guards and cleats.

The Great Decisions Discussion follows the program set by the Foreign Policy Association, a national, nonprofit, nonpartisan, nongovernmental, educational organization to educate Americans about the significant international issues. This month, an informational discussion is introduced by a short video presentation on the topic "U. S. Defense and Security Policy" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 12 and 26 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. A one-time $5 fee covers costs of the new briefing book that covers all eight topics for the year and the video presentations. HISTORY VIDEO | Cedar Lake
Watch a video presentation of an historic expedition to Mt. Everest at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Lake County Public Library's Cedar Lake branch, 10010 W. 133rd Ave. It was a half century ago that Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first human beings to stand atop the highest mountain on earth. Now their sons, along with Brent Bishop (son of the first American to summit Everest), make a historic expedition to face Everest's unforgiving heights. Refreshments will be served.

Gary Community School Corporation will host a Student/Parent Informational Session for the New Secondary Experience on Aug. 6 at the Gary Career Center, 1800 E. 35th Ave. Administrators and faculty will discuss the New Secondary Experience and the importance of high school students staying focused and on track. New requirements created by the state and district for high school graduation will be outlined.

Lake Central Band Boosters are seeking event sponsors and foursomes for its inaugural "Music is Important" golf outing Aug. 15 at White Hawk Country Club in Crown Point. The best-ball tournament begins with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Sponsorship opportunities include event sponsor, $5000; beverage cart sponsor, $1,000; driving range/putting green sponsor, $500 and hole sponsor, $300. There are spots for 144 players or 36 foursomes. The outing fee is $100 per player or $400 per foursome for dinner and amenities. There will also be multiple prize opportunities including a new car for a hole-in-one. Entry deadline is Aug. 6.
