A trip to Door County

My daughter, Debra, and I recently spent a restful week in beautiful Door County, Wisc.

This 75-mile-long peninsula is home to five state parks, 10 lighthouses and more than 300 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. It is at the 45th Latitude, exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole.

We stayed at the Newport Resort in Egg Harbor within a short walk of the harbor on the Green Bay side. Historical accounts record an 1825 landing of a trade flotilla in the harbor. A good-natured war broke out among the landing party and ended in a huge egg fight that left the traders and spectators covered with eggs and the shoreline littered with egg shells .

These days, the homes and gardens are well groomed and visitors are welcomed in the many shops, a brewery named Shipwrecked that offered five specialty brews and excellent food, and a nearby winery.

We covered all 300 miles of shoreline, visited parks, walked on the Lake Michigan shore and found many of the lighthouses that can be reached by land. Others are only accessible by boat or on the Annual Lighthouse Walk.

There is just too much to see in one week, so next year we hope to return to see the rest.
