Dinner | Lynwood

Lynwood Church of God, 20721 Torrence Ave., will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a corned beef and cabbage dinner

with Irish soda bread and dessert from 4 to 7 tonight. Adults eat for $8, children 12 and younger eat for $6. It's a fundraiser.

Spring break camp | Calumet City

The Calumet Memorial Park District's Spring Break Camp is for kids in first through eighth grades and will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 24 through March 28. The fee is $40 per participant. Pre-camp from 8 until 10 a.m., and post-camp from 4 to 6 p.m., are also available for additional fees of $10 each. Today is the last day to register.

Essay contest | Lansing

The GFWC Illinois Lansing Junior Woman's Club is having a Stay Safe essay contest. In an effort to raise awareness of family safety and injury prevention, the Lansing Junior Woman's Club is organizing the contest for children in kindergarten through eighth grade who are Lansing residents attending Lansing schools. The winner will be selected for a special prize - a ride to school on a fire engine. Essays can be on any topic related to safety - at home, at play, in the car, at school or in your neighborhood. They must have one source. Essay deadline is March 31. Entries should include the name, school, grade and phone number of the child entering. Mail entries to Lansing Junior Woman's Club, P.O. Ski, sports | Chicago

Lakeshore Ski and Sports Club will meet at 7 p.m. March 19 at Dapper's East, 2901 W. Addison Ave. All who are interested are invited to attend and learn about the ski trips that have been scheduled for this winter as well as many social activities. The ski season is well under way but there are still a few openings on the remaining ski trips.

Republic steel | Chicago

Republic Steel Retirees Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. March 20 at Steve's Lounge, 13200 Baltimore Ave. in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood. All retirees are welcome. Dinner is at 6:45 p.m. The cost is $13 for dues paid members and $18 for others.

Centerpieces | Crete

Susan Powell of InFocus Design will present Spring Centerpieces, a hands-on class for beginners and experienced participants at Crete Park District. The creation can be used as a centerpiece, door or wall hanging. Class will take place at 6:30 p.m. March 20. The fee is $52, and Crete Park District residents pay $35. Kite flying | Calumet City

The Calumet Memorial Park District will host Kite Flying from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 27. Kids in the first through eighth grades will make, decorate and fly their own kites. They can bring a sack lunch for a picnic. The fee is $3 per participant and includes all materials. Registration is required and is now being taken at the Memorial Park Recreation Office, 612 Wentworth Ave.

Historical society | Chicago

The Southeast Chicago Historical Society will conduct its annual membership meeting at 11 a.m. March 29 in the Calumet Park Field House, 9801 Avenue G. All members with dues up to date should attend and vote on the new slate of officers. The officers

presented by the nominating committee will be announced. Nominations may be made from the floor. Refreshments will be served and a short program will be presented.

Appreciation dinner | Lynwood

LARC will hold its annual appreciation dinner starting at 6 p.m. April 4 at Villa de Bruno in Lynwood. It will celebrate LARC's tradition of serving people with developmental disabilities in Lansing and other south suburban communities. The evening will include recognition of LARC employees, supporters and clients for their service within the organization. Tickets for the dinner are $50 per person and both a silent and live auction of donated items will be offered to attendees. LARC's Friendship Quilt is annually built by individuals who hand stitch 16 separate designs that are then sewn into a quilt. Tickets for the quilt raffle are $1 each or six for $5.

Volunteer workshop | Lansing

The Lansing Public Library and the South Area Literacy Council will present a workshop to train volunteers interested in tutoring adults who need to speak, read and write in English. After completing training, volunteers will spend two hours each week with their assigned student. Tutoring sessions take place at local library.

The workshop will be presented in two sessions: from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5 and April 12. Both are at Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave.

Volunteers do not need college degrees or know how to speak a foreign language. There is no fee for the training program and materials will be provided.

PULLMAN TOUR | Munster

Munster Parks and Recreation Department offers a trip with Ted Golat and Seecago Tours to visit America's first planned industrial community listed as a National Historic District. The tour to Chicago's Pullman neighborhood is April 3. Participants leave at 8 a.m. and return at 3 p.m. from the Munster pool parking lot, 8837 Calumet Ave. The tour includes Pullman Museum, Greenstone Church, a catered box lunch at Hotel Florence, and a historic tour of the town and surrounding area. Fee is $69 for residents, $74 for nonresidents and $67 for Keen-Ager members. Register at Town Hall, 1005 Ridge Road.

ALZHEIMER'S SESSION | Munster

Alzheimer's Services of Northern Indiana, affiliated with the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, offers Memory Loss in Later Life at 76 p.m. March 26 at Hartsfield Village, 10000 Columbia Ave. Barbara Dzikowski, program director for Alzheimer's Services, will explain memory loss in later life - what's normal and what's not. She'll address what people can do to maintain memory, and she will answer individual questions. Seating is limited; RSVP.

Karate | Calumet City

The next session of Wado-Ki Karate, specifically designed by Sensei Roger Jerome and Sensei Dotty Jerome to encourage self-confidence, stress discipline, promote fitness, and sharpen attention span, will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 19 to May 7. This program is open to ages 4 through adult. The fee is $35 per participant. Registration is required and is now being taken at the Memorial Park Recreation Office.
