Police tow vehicles, issue citations for plate offenses
HAMMOND | Police wrote 120 citations and towed 66 cars and trucks in an early Friday morning vehicle registration check at an apartment complex just south of downtown.
Hammond Police Traffic Division officers swept the Douglas Pointe Apartments on Hyles Avenue at Douglas Street just after 4 a.m., looking for violations of state laws, which require residents to get a state driver's license, and state title and license plates for their vehicles within 60 days of settling in the state.
Violators of these "reciprocity" statutes receive notice of a mandatory court appearance.
Of the 66 vehicles impounded, 61 were seized for reciprocity violations, police spokesman Sgt. Michael Jorden said.
Police Chief Brian Miller said out-of-state registrations on vehicles belonging to people living in the city is a repeat complaint at neighborhood association meetings and the monthly Mayor's Night Out sessions.
Residents who have information about possible reciprocity violations in their neighborhood can call the Hammond Police at (219) 852-6369. Callers can remain anonymous.
