Cancer patients receive support

MUNSTER | The Cancer Resource Centre offers free education programs and support groups for those with a cancer diagnosis and their families.

The center is at 900 Ridge Road, Suite J. Participants should call (219) 836-3349 to register for any educational or networking group.

Yoga, open to beginners or accomplished meditators, is offered from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday and 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Wellness Support Group meets from 10 to 11:30 or 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. It allows an opportunity to share feelings, receive support and learn ways to cope with the experiences of having cancer. It's led by a professional.

Prostate Networking Group meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Dr. Brian Billmeyer, a urologist from Community Hospital in Munster, will talk about a state-of-the-art system that will enable surgeons to perform less invasive surgery with greater accuracy and fewer complications, including less pain, blood loss and a quicker recovery. Spouses and guests are welcome.

Couples Confronting Cancer Together is offered from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The group is designed for those with cancer and their spouse/significant other.

Healing Touch meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Linda Aimone conducts Healing Touch using hands-on and energy-based techniques to balance and align the human energy field. Body, mind, emotion and spirit are touched through this therapeutic process. A prescription from one's physician is required prior to attending the session.

Chi Gong, the precursor of Tai Chi, meets from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday. Tai Chi meets from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. It emphasizes balance, posture, breathing techniques, concentration and complete relaxation.

Breast Cancer Support Group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The group is designed for women coping with a breast cancer diagnosis.

Coming up is Look Good: Feel Better, which is set for 2 to 4 p.m. June 11. It's for women undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. Holli Zabek, an esthetician from Spa Pointe in Munster, will teach beauty techniques to help restore appearance and self-image during cancer treatment.

The session will include skin, nail care and makeup advice. Klassic Wraps will give a demonstration on how to work with scarves and head wraps. Seating is limited.
