TRIVIA NIGHT | Crown Point

Gather a team of four to eight people and enter the Trivia Night fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. today at Hammes Hall, St. Mary Catholic Community School, 405 E. Joliet St. Match wits against other teams to win cash and Prizes will also be awarded for the Best decorated Team Table, and there will be basket and 50/50 raffles. Cost is $25 per person for entry fee, soft drinks, beer and wine and popcorn, or bring your own snacks or dinner. Adults only, and teams can register at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Class of 2009 trip to Washington, D.C.

LAS VEGAS NIGHT | Hobart

Las Vegas Night will be held from 6:30 p.m. to midnight today at the St. Bridget Parish Center (gym), 107 Main St. Admission is $10 and includes an Italian beef sandwich with chips and all you can drink beer. Black jack, Texas Hold'em Poker, 5 Card Stud, Beat the Dealer, roulette, money and dice wheels will be available.

ADOPTION SHELTER | Merrillville

A spaghetti dinner is planned to benefit the Lake County Sheriff's Animal Adoption Shelter. The dinner will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 30 at Operating Engineers Hall, 2193 W. 84th Place. Pam Jones, a correspondent for WBBM/Channel 2 in Chicago, will be the guest, and Chief Marco Kuyachich will emcee. Tickets, available at the door or at the shelter, 3011 W. 93rd Ave., Crown Point, cost $7 for adults and $3 for children younger than 6. Donations of canned food, blankets, towels and other cat and dog needs are welcome. Proceeds will help fund medical treatment, spay and neutering for shelter animals. The shelter has a no-kill policy.

MICRO MINERALS | Merrillville

RESTORE LAGOONS | Gary

Gary Sanitary District invites the public to participate in a project at 10 a.m. today at Marquette Park in Miller to celebrate Green Gary. Volunteers will work to improve and protect water quality through restoration of native wetland and plants at Marquette Park lagoons. Wear work clothes and gloves. The public may stop by throughout the day to observe and learn about native plants.

DINNER & DANCE | Cedar Lake

A Family Pasta Dinner & Dance to benefit Parents as Teachers at Hanover will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. May 2 at the Hanover Central High School cafeteria, 10120 W. 133rd Ave. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children and includes a pasta dinner with rolls and salad, a jump house, a deejay, raffles and a commemorative CD sale. Proceeds will benefit PATH, a voluntary early childhood parent education program that includes home visits by certified parent educators and family activities., and has grown to include five educators that serve 177 children in 123 families, with 27 on a waiting list. A 50/50 match will be provided by a Lake County philanthropist. Tickets must be purchased by April 28.

DRIVER SAFETY | Merrillville

The AARP Driver Safety Program, a nationally recognized refresher course geared to the safety needs of the mature driver, will be presented from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 30 and May 1 at the Lake County Public Library's Hobart branch, 100 N. Main St. Participants in the two-day class may be eligible to receive insurance discounts. There is a $10 fee due at class, and attendees can bring a snack. Registration is required.

SOLDIER PHONES | Lake County

Turn in old cell phones to the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department so soldiers can call home. For every old cell phone turned in under this program, a 100-minute prepaid calling card is sent overseas for soldiers to use to call home. This year every National Guard unit in Illinois is assisting in this effort and so are the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department and the Buckley Homestead WWII Tribute sponsoring units. The goal is to collect 1,500 phones. Drop off sites include the Buckley Homestead County Park Visitor Center on Hendricks Road, one-fourth mile south of Ind. 2 in Lowell during the week of April 28 - May 4; Lake County Parks and Recreation Department, 8411 E. U.S. 30 ( just west of Deep River Waterpark ) in Merrillville, and the Veteran's Tent during the World War II Tribute at Buckley Homestead on May 3 and 4.

LEARN TO KNIT | Cedar Lake

Beginners can learn the basics of knitting and experienced knitters can improve their skills in knitting classes offered at 7 p.m. April 28 at the Lake County Public Library's Cedar Lake branch, 10010 W. 133rd Ave. Participants should bring knitting needles, size 7 or larger, and yarn.

ART LEAGUE | Hammond

LACARE Art League meets at 6:30 p.m. April 28 at the Hammond Public Library's Howard branch, 7047 Grand Ave. The evening's demonstrator will be Leona Jurincie, resident artist for the South Shore Arts at Substation 9 in Hammond, who will show new techniques for oil painting. LACARE welcomes visitors to its meetings and serves refreshments and has raffles each month.

Book Buddies meets at 6:30 p.m. April 28 at the Lake County Public Library's 41st Avenue branch, 3491 W. 41st Ave. An informal discussion of "Into the Forest" by Jean Hegland will take place. "Baltimore Blues" by Laura Lippman will be featured It's a mystery involving an ex-newspaper reporter, a polluted river, two friends and a murdered fiance.

BIRD RESCUE | Schererville

A fundraiser for Bird Lovers Only Rescue is set for noon to 8 p.m. April 27 at Steak and Shake, 312 U.S. 41. Twenty percent of purchases made those hours will be given to the organization, which recently received its 501c3 federal tax exemption. Vouchers needed for the event can be found online.

MALE CHORUS | Gary

St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church male chorus invites Northwest Indiana residents to its annual male chorus celebration at 4 p.m. April 27 at 2300 Grant St. Guests are St. John Baptist Church, St. James Baptist male chorus, Calvary Institutional Baptist Church, Crossroads Baptist Church and Metropolitan Baptist Church. CINCO DE MAYO | Chesterton

Jacob's Ladder Pediatric Rehab Center is hosting its annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 1 at Sand Creek Country Club, 1001 Sand Creek Drive. The evening will include Mexican-inspired food and beverages, live music from the Kathy Orgel Trio and silent auction items. Tickets are $50. Proceeds from this event will benefit the center's efforts to provide a comprehensive range of rehabilitative services and therapies for children in Northwest Indiana. Fundraising is necessary because insurance and Medicaid only covers a portion of the cost of the services. The goal of Jacob's Ladder is to provide therapy care that will be accessible and affordable to all children in Northwest Indiana.
