Woman dies, man critically injured
VALPARAISO | One person was killed and another was critically injured when their car was struck from behind by a semi about 1 p.m. Tuesday in front of the Pilot Travel Centers at 4105 E. U.S. 30, Valparaiso police said.
Valparaiso police spokesman Sgt. Michael Grennes said the crash, which occurred on westbound U.S. 30, resulted in the westbound lanes being closed for hours.
Police did not immediately release the name of the deceased woman or the injured man. The victims are not believed to be local residents. Their car, which was crumpled by the impact, came to rest off the road.
Police said the truck driver was not injured. The semi, which remained on the road, leaked oil, police said. Porter EMS, Washington Township firefighters and the Porter County Hazardous Material Team responded to the scene.
