VIDEO CAMP | Hobart

M & M Productions' video production class for children 11 to 17 starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at 227 Center St. Held on three Saturdays, the workshop will include one day of camera techniques and another day devoted to the different types of shooting and editing TV-style and film-style shooting. Participants will shoot a small scene from scripts provided, and the third week will cover nonlinear editing, including storyboard and timeline-based systems. Cost of the camp is $35. REGISTER TO VOTE | Hobart

The Indiana presidential primary election is May 6, and those who still need to register to vote or change their address can pick up an application at the Hobart City Clerk's office, 414 Main St., or visit www.in.gov/sos/elections. COLLEGE FAIR | Merrillville

A College Fair will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 3 at Andrean High School, 5959 Broadway. Free and pen to all area high school students and parents, admission representatives from more than 70 colleges and universities nationwide will be available to answer questions about admission, financial aid, application procedures and more.

RIDING PROGRAM | Hobart

Exceptional Equestrians Unlimited Inc., a 510 (c)(3) nonprofit charity offering therapeutic horseback riding lessons, is accepting applications for the spring session on a first come, first served basis. The EEU program provides recreational and therapeutic equine activities for children and adults with various physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Classes, both mounted and unmounted, will be held at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, April 7 through June 28 in Hobart. REVIEW THE BOOK | DeMotte

Join the group to review "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night" by Mark Haddon, the current Jasper County Reads selection, at 1:30 p.m. April 1 at the DeMotte Library, 901 Birch St. SW. All Jasper County residents have been encouraged to read this novel told through the eyes of a 15-year-old autistic boy, in March-April. The discussion will be led by Carole Utermark. SIGN LANGUAGE | Wheatfield

Beginning Sign Language classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, April 3 to May 8, at the Wheatfield Library, 350 S. Bierma St. The alphabet and commonly used words will be taught by Patrick Oatis, director of Deaf Services at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a teacher and administrator at schools for the deaf for 14 years. Cost is $30, payable upon registration. Books may be purchased, or rented for $3.

SCRAPBOOKING CLASS | Merrillville

Merrillville Adult Education is offering an Advanced Scrapbooking course from 6 to 8 p.m. April 2 at the Senior Citizen Center at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place. This course is for those already scrapbooking who want to learn different techniques/embellishments while creating two 12-by-12-inch spreads which just need the photos and journaling added at home. A basic tool kit is required for the class: a 12-by-12 paper trimmer, fine-point scissors, paper piercer, preferred adhesive and mini glue dots. Additional supplies will be provided to create two spreads. Course fee is $29. Registration is required.

CELEBRATION OF GIFTS | Hobart

St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point will hold its Fifth Annual Celebration of Gifts fundraiser April 5 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30. ENVIROMOBILE VISITS | Crown Point

The Enviromobile, a mobile environmental education program offering hands-on science activities, will stop by March 28 at the Crown Point Community Library, 214 S. Court St., and its Winfield branch, 10645 Randolph St. Learn all about possums at 10 a.m. at Crown Point and at 2 p.m. at Winfield. Children in kindergarten through grade 6 are welcome. Sign up at the library where the event will take place.

NEW HORIZONS | Hammond

New Horizons is the theme of the 27th Emporium at 6:30 p.m. April 18 at Bishop Noll Institute, 1519 Hoffman St. Tickets are $100 until April 4 and $125 after that date for cocktails and light dinner buffet, silent, scholarship and live auctions and entertainment by Marilyn Gaza and Standing Ovation DJs. Also, a ceremony to induct Bev Mullaney for Outstanding Service and Pet Doherty '71 as standing Alum into the BNI Hall of Honor will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium, and all are invited.

COMMUNITY KITCHENS | Crown Point

Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor a workshop called Starting a Community Kitchen. It will be held at five different locations across Indiana, including a program from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 9 in Crown Point. The teaching team will discuss topics such as sanitation requirements, the costs of starting a kitchen, staffing considerations, liability issues and facility inspections. Along with the teaching team, a local financial representative and an economic development representative will make up of a panel to discuss financing aspects of starting a commercial kitchen. They will speak about grants, loans and other available assistance programs. Keener will talk about the requirements that facilities need to fulfill before they can become regulated kitchens. Some of these requirements include washable, non-stick surfaces and sloped floors. He also will discuss how you can turn an existing building into a kitchen. Others on the teaching team include Elaine

Fisher, Ball State University director of the Office of Building Better Communities; Steve Franks, Gateways program manager of the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center; Shirley Vargas, wholesale supervisor for the state's food protection program in the Indiana State Department of Health; and Linda Wood, regional director for the Southeastern Indiana Small Business Development Center. Registration is $75 per individual or $60 per person for three or more and covers lunch, refreshments and a binder of information. Registration deadline is April 2 for the Crown Point workshop. BOOK TALK | Wheatfield

April is Autism Awareness Month, and "Daniel Isn't Talking" by Marti Leimbach is the title selected for the book discussion at 7 p.m. April 8 at the Wheatfield Library, 350 S. EAT YOUR WORDS | Hobart

Edible Book Fest - Eat Your Words! is offered from 1 to 5 p.m. April 5 at the Lake County Public Library's Hobart branch, 100 N. Main St. It can look like a book, word, letter, refer to a character or just have something to do with books! The festival takes place around the world on or about April 1. Participants create edible masterpieces that are exhibited, documented and then consumed. Genealogy computer database searching will be available from 10 a.m. to noon April 1 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. 81st Ave. Participants join the Indiana librarian for a fun class featuring a trio of genealogy subscription computer databases: Ancestry Library Edition, Heritage Quest Online and ProQuest Obituaries. Learn how to search for ancestors in censuses, family histories, vital records, and more. Participants may bring their ancestor's names, dates, and places. Search on the Internet for genealogical information at 2 and 6:30 p.m. April 2 and at 6:30 p.m. April 14 at the Lake County Public Library's Cedar Lake branch, 10010 E. 133rd Ave. Participants will discover the amount of information available on the Internet for tracing their ancestors and will learn how to use the library's Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest, and Pro-Quest Obituaries databases. BALLROOM DANCING | Crown Point

A five-week Ballroom Dance class for ages 18 and older meets 8 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays beginning April 1 in the Aerobic Room at Southlake YMCA, 1450 S. Court St. Registration will end March 29. Instructor Laura Navarro has 20 years of experience. Cost is $40 for individual members and $75 for couples, and $50 for individual nonmembers and $95 for couples. Baby-sitting is available, free to members and $5 per hour for nonmembers.
