CRITTER CAMP | Munster

Humane Society Calumet Area and Banfield Charities will offer Critter Camp, a week aimed at providing a safe, hands-on environment for ages 8 to 12. Participants learn about various aspects of animal care, career opportunities in animal welfare and build a sense of respect for animals. Registration is limited. The two sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon July 7 to 11 and Aug. 11 to 15 at the shelter, 421 45th St. The registration fee is $90, which includes materials for crafts, a T-shirt, group photo and daily snack. POKER TOURNAMENT | Highland

Highland Dollars for Scholars hosts a Texas Hold 'Em charity poker tournament July 12 at American Legion Post 180, 2703 Jewett St. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the tournament starts at 2 p.m. Prize money of $25,000 will be offered. Buy-in donation is $125, which includes $2,500 in tournament chips. Blinds start at $100 and $200, with doubles every 30 minutes. Rebuys cost $25 for the first 90 minutes up to three rebuys when under $1,000. Participants must be 21 and older and bring valid ID. Registration fee is nonrefundable and nontransferrable. Raffles for baseball tickets, golf equipment and packages and door prizes will be included.

REGISTER FOR SCHOOL | Crown Point

The Northwest Indiana Special Education Cooperative provides services to children who have a variety of disabilities, ranging in age from 3 to 21, who reside in the school corporations of Crown Point, Griffith, Hanover, Highland, Hobart, Lake Ridge, Lake Station, Merrillville, River Forest or Tri-Creek. Registration for students who have been identified as eligible to attend classes at Eagle Park Community School, 2150 W. 97th Place, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. Aug. 11 and 12 at the school. All students must be registered for the upcoming school year, regardless of whether or not they attended Eagle Park during the 2007-08 school year. Families seeking information regarding preschool screenings should contact the school office after Aug. 8.

IUN REGISTRATION | Gary

Registration has begun at Indiana University Northwest for both summer sessions and the fall semester. Students enrolled at the university may register online using the OneStart system. Most summer classes have slots remaining, but space is limited. Current summer and fall schedules can be viewed at https://onestart.iu.edu, or http://www.iun.edu/~regisnw/register.shtml. Summer Session II began June 30. Anyone registering through July 7 must pay a $40 late fee. Fall classes begin Aug. 25, and late registration begins on that day and extends until Aug. 30; a $40 late fee applies. For registration assistance, students may call the helpline at (219) 980-6939 or visit the registrar's office in Room 109 Hawthorn Hall. Summer enrollment is also open to nontraditional and returning students.

Baseball kudos | South Holland

The South Suburban College Bulldogs baseball team presented the 2008 NCJAA Regional Championship Trophy to the Board of Trustees at the June 12 board meeting. In 2008, the South Suburban Bulldogs Baseball Team earned the NJCAA Division I Region IV Championship at Bulldog Stadium. Their run toward Nationals ended at the Midwest District Tournament, and a final record of 40-19. Chairman Frank Zuccarelli and the Board of Trustees recognized the many accolades earned along the way for Ruzich and several of his players at the meeting.

This season marked Ruzich's 22nd consecutive winning campaign as head coach of the Bulldogs, and earned him a seventh Regional Coach of the Year Award.

As for the players, four Bulldogs were named to the All-Region Team including pitcher Brandon Peters (Lake Central).
