MUNSTER | Town leaders and neighbors are gearing up for Tuesday's National Night Out Against Crime at the Munster Community Pool.

The Munster Police Department and CHOICE Community Council are hosts to the town's crime watch event, which is from 5 to 9 p.m. Educational activities, free swimming for Munster residents with identification, kids games and door prizes will be part of the event.

"It's a way for the police and the community to celebrate together while educating the community about crime prevention," said James Ghrist, DARE/crime prevention officer of the Munster Police Department.

Adults and children can experience the Magic of Steve Kellogg, an exhibit of regional police cars and a drunken-driving simulation track.

People also can pick up crime prevention information, handouts from local businesses and food selections during the community's 12th annual event.

The National Night Out is sponsoring an on-site blood drive with the American Red Cross from 4 to 9 p.m. Donors will receive a T-shirt.

Participants must show identification, be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds or more, according to a Red Cross representative.
