Woman shot five times survives; man in critical condition
LAKE STATION | A 42-year-old Merrillville man, angry his wife was leaving him, followed his wife to a truck stop and shot her several times before turning the gun on himself, police said.
Oliver Jones, who reportedly shot himself in the head with a .357-caliber Magnum, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. He was in critical condition late Thursday, Police Chief Mike Stills said.
Urcella Tucker, 40, of Merrillville, who told police her husband followed her in his car then shot her five times including to the stomach, hand and calf, was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
She was in good condition, police said.
Stills said the shooting was reported to police about 9 p.m. Wednesday at Truck Stop of America, 1201 Ripley St.
When police arrived, they found Jones lying outside near a gas pump and Tucker inside the truck stop restaurant near the cash register, he said.
Tucker told police her husband of 10 years was apparently angry with her because she had told him last week their 19-year relationship was over and she was leaving.
She said she had been visiting a friend in Gary and was driving home on U.S. 20 when her 1996 Chrysler was rammed from the back.
Tucker, unsure of who was hitting her car, said she continued to drive south to the truck stop because she thought it would be a safe place where she could get help.
Once at the truck stop, she told police she parked by the front door and tried to go inside, Stills said.
But Jones jumped out of his 2003 Durango SUV and fired his gun at her five times, he said.
She told police she managed to get out of the passenger side of her car and run inside the truck stop restaurant, where she screamed for help.
Tucker said Jones at that point had emptied the gun, but he reloaded and shot himself in the head.
Stills said there were dents in the car Tucker was driving, which corroborated her report of being hit by another car.
